The Farm in Spring

We use transplants as much as possible because it gives crops a head start on weeds and weather. It also reduces or eliminates the need for later thinning of new stands. We start work in a “grow shed” and nurture the “plugs” in a variety of containers before planting them outside.

When the plant plugs are big enough to withstand a little unfriendly temperature, they’re transplanted into the beds where they’ll be grown to maturity. Sometimes, early in the season, they get a little extra protection against cold temperatures and drying winds with clear plastic cover or
milk crates.
